Membership of the institute

At the present time the Institute has some 1200 members.  The names of members, their qualifications and the subjects in which they are registered to teach are set out in the Year Book, which is published annually.  The Year Book also lists those who have been awarded the status of Student Graduate (new in late 2011).  Non-retired Members and Student Graduates are also listed on the Teacher Search section of the website, which provides an up to date search of teachers by subject, region or last name.

The key membership categories are:
  • Associate membership is granted to applicants who have satisfied the Registration Board that they have appropriate teaching experience and professional practice.  The Criteria for Registration section below outlines the requirements.  Associates are entitled to use the designation AIRMT.
  • Provisional membership is granted to those applicants who are, in the opinion of the Registration Board, close to completing the qualifications required for full registration.  Provisional registration is granted for up to three years, and it is expected that these members will apply for full registration within this timeframe.  Provisional members are not eligible to vote nor can they hold positions in the Council. A Provisional member may use the words “Provisional Member IRMT”
  • The Council may award an Associate with the designation of Fellow for their services to music teaching. Fellows are entitled to use the designation FIRMT.
  • The Council may, upon nomination of a branch, award an Associate with the designation of Distinguished Branch Member for their services to the branch and/or their community.
  • Associates who have reached the age of sixty-five (65) years and who have fewer than six pupils may apply to the Registrar for consideration by the Council for Retired status.  Retired members are not expected to be actively seeking new pupils.
Refer to the attached IRMTNZ Categories document for further details of all categories.  All members are required to comply with the IRMTNZ Rules and the IRMTNZ Code of Ethics.

OTHER CATEGORIES
  • Student Graduate status - The status of Student Graduate may be granted by the Registration Board to persons who have recently completed a university music degree or a qualification in performance and/or teaching of music from an examination board recognised by the Institute.  This new status has been set up in order  to help provide new teachers with support and assistance to build the experience required for membership as an Associate of the Institute.  Student Graduates will be assigned a mentor to assist them in gaining the appropriate experience and are expected to apply for full registration within a five year timeframe.  Student Graduates are not eligible to vote nor can they hold positions in the Council.
  • Affiliate status – The status of Affiliate may be granted by the Registration Board to persons in the music industry or involved with music education who have an interest in supporting the aims and objectives of the Institute but who are not eligible or do not wish to apply for membership as an Associate of the Institute.  Affiliates are not eligible to vote nor can they hold positions in the Council.
Refer to the IRMTNZ Categories document for further details. All Student Graduates and Affiliates are required to comply with the IRMTNZ Rules and the IRMTNZ Code of Ethics.

Criteria for Registration

Provisional membership is granted to those who are close to completing the requirements for full registration.

The Registration Board meets twice a year to consider applications for registration. In addition to evidence of qualifications the Board also requires applicants to give comprehensive details of their performing and teaching experience and competence including reports on lesson observations. Three Referee's statements are required. Special reports are sought for applicants seeking to become registered as teachers of Early Childhood Music.
