TEACHER TRAINING COURSES AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

TEACHER TRAINING COURSES

The Institute has developed training courses for studio music teachers which are open to members and nonmembers.

1. In-Service Teacher Training Courses
   These courses provide ongoing education for teachers and are run over 3 days for teaching pupils at various levels. Successful completion of each of these Inservice Courses gives 1 credit towards the Institute's Diploma (Dip IRMT).

2. Pre-Service Teacher Training Courses
    This 5 day course combines both correspondence and a short course of intensive study for music teachers. Successful completion of this course gives 2 credits towards the Institute's Diploma (Dip IRMT).

Dip IRMT

This Diploma, designed by the Council, is unique in that it gives recognition to community music making. Many teaching musicians in New Zealand either participate in or take leading roles in local choirs, orchestras or musical productions. It also serves the important purpose of encouraging those who teach music to expand their horizons and explore areas of musical endeavour which they may not otherwise consider. The core of the syllabus is the teaching section but performing ability, and general musicianship are part of the wider prescription. It incorporates both academic and practical excellence with flexibility of options for obtaining the 21 credits required. Attendance at Teacher Training Courses organised by the Institute of Registered Music Teachers also gains credit.
